For those not in the know, “Helluva Boss” is a free internet series on YouTube created by the same creative team behind the “Hazbin Hotel” series on Amazon Prime. Both shows take place within the same world of Hell and both originate on YouTube. But while “Hazbin Hotel” was the first to arrive on the scene and got picked up by A24, “Helluva Boss” remains independent on YouTube but with the same following supporting both shows. And as a holiday gift, we have just been graced with the Season Two finale. Now that it’s come to an end, and according to the creator of the show Vivienne Medrano it could be a long while before we see the start of Season Three, here are my thoughts on this particular season.
It’s no secret that I’ve been a fan of these shows since their inception and I’m clearly not the only one because both of these shows have accumulated a massive fanbase. This particular season is very interesting for a myriad of reasons. One of them is that this season has been gradually releasing episodes over the course of two years. The first episode of Season Two was released in July of 2022 and we just now got the season finale at the very end of 2024. One of the perks of being independent, you can release whatever you want whenever you want. It just goes to show that dedicated fandoms will wait patiently for the release of the next episode.

And this season was definitely worth the wait. It was also quite the emotional rollercoaster ride throughout its duration. This season primarily focuses on relationships, particularly the rocky relationship between Blizø, the boss imp of I.M.P. voiced by Brandon Rogers, and Stolas, an owl-like Prince of Hell voiced by Bryce Pinkham. Both of them did a tremendous job with their voice acting roles. The emotions that they were able to convey were very convincing. Their relationship during this season was so poignant that it really struck a chord with me personally because of the life situations that I was dealing with at the time. I really gravitated towards the character of Stolas in this season. And a side note: as a cosplayer as well, I would very much like to portray this character at some point.
This show is stacked with other very talented voice actors including Richard Hortiz as Moxxie, Vivian Nixon as Moxxie’s wife Millie, Erica Lindbeck as Blitzø’s adopted angsty hellhound Loona, James Monroe Inglehart as Asmodeus/Ozzie the demon prince of the Lust Ring of Hell, and Alex Brightman as Ozzie’s secret love interest and jester Fizzarolli (who is also a favorite of mine). The season is also filled with special guest voice actors such as Kesha, Patrick Page, Jonathan Freeman, and John Waters just to name a few. Literally everyone involved brought their A-game when it came to voicing their characters.

While I am still a massive fan of this series, I’d be lying if I said it was perfect. There were a large majority of episodes that were in fact perfect in my eyes, but not everything in other episodes was perfect. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the “Unhappy Campers” episode mainly because of how Moxxie acted during that episode, but it did stick the landing. I also wasn’t the biggest fan of the “Ghostfuckers” episode which felt more like a filler episode than a continuation of the overall narrative. It had a lot of good moments in it, but I rank the episodes based on rewatchability and I don’t foresee myself revisiting those episodes anytime soon.
The songs throughout this season were fantastic. Some more so than others. They manage to get a lot of Broadway stars involved in this series which only elevates the vocals of each song, but was we know from past movie experiences that the lyrics are just as important. If these were poorly written-songs, there’s a good chance that I wouldn’t be singing their praises right now. But thankfully, all of these songs are very well written. They will definitely be stuck in my head for a long time. I do wish that they would release a soundtrack for this show as they did with “Hazbin Hotel”. We’re at the end of two seasons and we don’t have a soundtrack for either one. That’s just criminal at this point.

Overall, I greatly enjoyed watching this season of “Helluva Boss”. It is very well-written, well-animated, well-acted, and very well-orchestrated on all fronts. It’s amazing that this is a show that we get for free on YouTube. This is very high-quality content that would normally be behind a subscription paywall on any other platform. If you haven’t seen or heard of “Helluva Boss”, I would highly recommend checking it out. If you’re a fan of “Hazbin Hotel” but haven’t heard of “Helluva Boss”, I’m not sure how that’s even possible, but if so, you will most certainly become a fan of “Helluva Boss” as well. Because this show is one Helluva good time and I can’t wait to see what Season Three has in store for us however long it takes to get here.
