“Companion” is one of those movies that benefits from knowing nothing going in. While the first trailer delivers vague intrigue through great marketing, the second trailer pretty much shows its hand. A fact that I wish was avoided beforehand. If you were fortunate enough to have avoided the trailers, then take this opportunity to stop reading this review and go experience “Companion” ignorant of the plot details. I promise, it’ll be worth it. For those that need more of a sell, then I guess read on. Just know that I will have to reveal certain details about the movie from this point on.
“Companion” is a great movie! I was fortunate to have caught it early at a Monday night AMC “Scream” Unseen, which usually means a mystery movie that is horror-based. And while the movie is great and I had a lot of fun watching it, this movie is definitely not a horror movie in any way. There’s nothing scary to be found here, no jump scares or anything like that. This is a movie that I would categorize more as a dark comedy movie. One loaded with blood and plenty of laughs.

So, what is this movie about? Well, it’s tough, because I don’t want to give too much away. It’s about a group of friends/couples that go out on a little get-together in a vacation home in the middle of the woods in order for them to bond together over the weekend. Except a chain of events causes things to start unraveling their weekend plans. Every synopsis I’ve looked up for this movie is very vague on the details so I’m following suit. Like I said earlier, it’s best not to know much going in.
The movie stars Jack Qaid and Sophie Thatcher as the main couple of the movie Josh and Iris and I thought they both did a great job in this movie. They worked very well off of each other especially when things go off the rails. Even the supporting cast did a great job contributing to the film. Nobody in the movie was dull or boring which is great for a movie that’s only an hour and 40 minutes long.

Overall, I had a great time watching “Companion”. Not scary at all, but provided plenty of laughs. I would compare this movie to that of “The Menu”. They’re both the same when it comes to both the horror factor and the comedy factor. Way more humorous than scary. It worked out very well for “The Menu” and I’d say I enjoyed “Companion” almost as much. If you had any interest in seeing “Companion”, I don’t think you will be disappointed. Just know that it’s not a horror film. Perhaps, if you’re in a relationship, this would be a good idea for a Valentine’s Day surprise date night movie. One that will definitely surprise both you and your Companion.
