We all know the story of “Freaky Friday”. Two conflicting opposites magically switch bodies and have to walk in each other’s shoes and learn a life lesson to switch back. It’s been done many times in many ways. Some good, and some atrocious. I’m looking at you, “The Change-Up”. The original “Freaky Friday” starring Jodie Foster was released back in 1976 and there have been plenty of remakes of this particular film since then, but the most notable version was the 2003 version starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. I was a kid when that was released, and I remember really liking it. Now, here we are 22 years later, and we have a sequel to that rendition, “Freakier Friday”. The question is… does it still hold up after all these years?
“Freakier Friday” brings Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan back together again as Tess and Anna Coleman, the mother and daughter duo, and in their absence between films, Anna now has a daughter of her own named Harper, played by Julia Butters, but just like Anna and her mother, she has difficulties connecting with her daughter. The tensions only rise when Anna meets a new guy named Eric, played by Manny Jancito, and over time, they choose to marry after she presumably saw how he slayed in “The Acolyte”. The problem is that he has a daughter named Lily, played by Sophia Hammons, and Harper and Lily do not get along at all. But a mystical event by a fortune teller causes Anna, Tess, Harper, and Lily to switch in each other’s bodies. Now they must learn a lesson to switch back, but Lily and Harper plan to sabotage the wedding so that they don’t have to become family.

This movie is not breaking any new ground, but in my opinion, it was entertaining for what it was. It easily could have been a lot worse than what it ended up being. There were a few moments where I definitely laughed, and there were a few times when I felt that the jokes were trying too hard to be funny and ultimately falling flat. Some physical comedy, some ageist jokes, all wrapped up in a life lesson by the end. Everything you’d expect from a “Freaky Friday” sequel in 2025.
Jamie Lee Curtis is definitely doing the most in this movie, and you can tell that she might have been the one having the most fun out of the whole cast. Lindsay Lohan is fine reprising her role in this franchise. Nothing outstanding, but doing good with what she’s given. It was nice to see her on the big screen for the first time in a good long while. Both Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan still work well with each other. Julia Butters and Sophia Hammons are the new arrivals, and they do a decent enough job, too. One of the most interesting factors about this particular movie is the fact that they managed to bring back just about everyone from the first movie back in this one, including a lot of the side characters, some of whom barely had screentime in the first one, but they all returned here. It was almost like one big “Freaky Friday” reunion.

Overall, if you were a fan of the 2003 iteration of “Freaky Friday”, then you just might be able to find some enjoyment with “Freakier Friday”. It’s not perfect, but it does its best after such a long absence. Only time will tell if it manages to keep its audience. The screening was full of fans of all ages who were just excited to be seeing this new addition, so it’s possible that it may find some new fans to support it. I personally found the movie to be mildly enjoyable, but I can see how some people may not enjoy it, especially if you are not a fan of the 2003 predecessor. I think that the first film is better than this one because this one, while still trying to do something different, still plays off of some of the same beats as the last one. But don’t freak out, as it still provides plenty of fun for the right audience.
