Marvel/Disney has done a nice job introducing characters and getting the audience to fall in love with them and the iteration portrayed by the actors in the films. In the case of The Guardians of the Galaxy James Gunn has made them funny and entertaining so much that they end up getting their own Christmas special. Even though most of them are aliens they still feel bad that Peter doesn’t have a family to spend Christmas with. In this special, he will have a family and a special guest to spend Christmas with.
After Kraglin (Sean Gunn) tells a story about how Yondu didn’t let Young Peter celebrate Christmas, Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) hatch a plan to go to earth to kidnap Kevin Bacon as a present for Peter Quill (Chris Pratt). Things don’t exactly go as planned though and that’s where some of the laughs come in in this pretty funny Christmas Special. The fish out of water aspect of these characters on earth brings a lot of laughs.
Now that Marvel is able to do these one-off stories that are in the MCU but don’t really have an impact on the overall MCU now on Disney Plus, it lends itself to doing all kinds of stories. This kind of Christmas story is fun because you get some music and the holiday spirit which is always entertaining. The fact that you add in a bunch of aliens who don’t know exactly what Christmas is makes it even funnier. Disney Plus is the perfect place for a show like this.
I’m really happy Kevin Bacon came on board for this special. He added an element of enjoyment that I have rarely seen this year in any marvel film or Disney plus show to date. Peter had such an admiration for him he didn’t even understand that his persona had reached such heights. Bacon even has his own life he has to put on hold to help Peter celebrate. It’s the right thing to do on all accounts.
The look of the special is on par with Thor Love & Thunder. That is where the Guardians came from before this story that is set in Knowhere, the new home of the Guardians. James Gunn even throws in a few secrets that were revealed in the special. If anybody saw the other two Guardians films they could have surmised one of them. The other one he announced at D23 Expo, which is a voice actor for Cosmo the Russian Space Dog.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special is a funny look at Christmas through the eyes of a bunch of aliens and a couple of humans. There are fun elements of singing and dancing but the main thing is that the Christmas spirit is very much present in the special. I’m glad Kevin Feige started doing these specials because the limits are endless on what they can do with them.
