A Sad and Beautiful World: The 2025 audience award winner at the Venice Film Festival, I was slightly skeptical of what a love story set during the undercurrent of political tensions in Lebanon spanning from childhood onward. There is an undeniable charm that pierces through the veil, and despite my overall reluctance to the broader romantic drama narrative, I admittedly found many of the sensual and serendipitous moments to have a special sheen that touched my soul.

The lead performances from Hasan Akil and Mounia Akl are highlights amongst an already strong ensemble. Additionally, the idea of this being Cyril Aris’ debut narrative feature, having such control over the tone through his direction, and delivering strong performances from the cast left me excited for his future.

Maddie’s Secret: The long-awaited debut feature of John Early, a beloved favorite of many independent artists and filmmakers. Fortunately, I went into the film blind and left impressed by the work done by Early and company. I was immediately endeared from the first scene, and what Early does while playing the titular Maddie is unreal. Has anyone ever been as committed to their roles as Kate Berlant and John Early are here? The film continues to evolve and change, and the latter half takes a turn that fits well thematically within the environment. I am very happy to report that John Early delivered a strong debut feature that is already pre-ordained to be a cult classic.

What Does That Nature Say To You: Another film, following the slow and reflective nature of Hong Sang-Soo’s methodical filmmaking. It’s quite funny even in comparison to some of Hong’s funnier films, especially as the film further reveals itself. The superb performances add to the core themes, with each actor’s heartfelt pathos. The third act provides a decent transition to the film’s primary messaging and left me thinking long after watching. At the end of the day, it is just more of the same from Hong, but when he has remained so consistent for so long, does it really matter?
